How the advice works

This Advisor separates three kinds of information, so you always know what a label means.

1. Historical buying guidance

Each product carries a timing call: Buy early, Buy at sale start, Wait, Gamble, No sale to wait for, or Not enough history. Calls come from The Beauty Chat's research into how about 130 brands and 21 retailers discounted during the 2024 and 2025 holiday seasons, using dated sources such as brand and retailer pages, archived captures and dated editorial. Where a brand has its own history, the call uses it; otherwise it follows the retailer's pattern, and the card says which. A timing call is not an endorsement.

2. Value

Retailers print a "value" on most gift sets. We do not treat it as proof. A set is labeled Good, Fair or Poor Value only after its contents and sizes are read from the retailer's page and each item is priced at the same retailer. When a mini is not sold on its own, its price is pro-rated from the standard size and marked as such, which usually flatters the set. Good Value means about 25% or more below buying the pieces, mostly at exact prices; Fair means 10 to 25%; Poor means under 10% or value that rests on minis. Everything else says "Not yet verified." Skip is used only with evidence.

3. Michelle's Picks

Only products Michelle has personally approved carry this label. Appearing in the Advisor is not a recommendation.

Affiliate links

Shopping links may be affiliate links through ShopMy. If you buy through them, The Beauty Chat may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Commission does not decide a product's timing call, value label or pick status, and products from retailers that pay no commission are listed the same way.

Freshness

Prices and listings were collected from Sephora and Ulta on Oct 27, 2026. They change daily, so check the retailer before you buy.
